Chole Tikki With Tomato Rice

I had planned to make chole ( chickpeas) and rice today for lunch. My daughter and I are very fond this combo, while my son is not.

While I was draining the boiled chole, I got this sudden idea of making tikkis with chole and serve with rice, hoping that my son would like it. I am very happy to say that he did like it and really enjoyed his meal:)

So friends, am very happily sharing yet another creation from my kitchen. Hope you all would like it too:)

Ingredients

For the Tomato Rice

Basmati rice – 1+1/2 cups
Chopped onions – 1 cup
Chopped tomatoes – 2 cups
Chopped garlic – 1 tbsp
Ghee – 2 tbsps
Cumin seeds ( jeera)- y 1 tsp
Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
Cumin powder ( jeera powder)- 1 tsp
Coriander powder ( dhania powder) – 2 tsps
Chole masala powder – 2 tsps
Salt to taste
Chopped coriander for garnish

For the Chole Tikki

Boiled chole ( chickpeas/ Konda kadalai) – 2 cups
Chopped onion – 1/2 cup
Rice flour – 2 tbsps
Red chilli powder – 1/2 tsp
Cumin powder – 2 tsps
Dry mango powder ( amchur)- 1/2 tsp
Garam masala – 1/2 tsp
Chopped coriander leaves – 2 tbsps
Oil – 2 tsps + as much required for shallow frying the tikkis
Salt to taste

For the Onion Salad

Onion – 1
Lemon juice – 1 tsp
Chopped coriander leaves – 1 tsp
Roasted sesame seeds – 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste

Method

To make the Tomato Rice

Wash and soak basmati rice for 10-15 mins.
Drain and keep it aside.

Heat ghee in a pan. Add cumin seeds. When it starts spluttering, add the chopped garlic and sauté for few mins. Then add the chopped onions and sauté till it turns pink. Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, cumin powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, chole masala powder and salt to taste. Mix well and cook till tomatoes turn soft.

Add the basmati rice and sauté for few mins. Add 3 cups of water and mix. Check for the seasonings. When the water starts to boil, reduce the flame, cover the pan with a lid and cook till the rice turns soft and dry.
Fluff the rice gently.

To make the Chole Tikki

Mash the boiled chole well. Add the chopped onions, rice flour, 2 tsps oil, cumin powder, red chilli powder, dry mango powder, garam masala powder, chopped coriander leaves and salt to taste.

Mix well and let it rest for few mins.
Make patties shallow fry on tawa till both sides turn golden.

To make the Onion Salad

Peel, wash and cut onion into thin slices.
Add lemon juice, salt to taste, sesame seeds and chopped coriander leaves and mix well.

To serve the Tomato rice with the Chole tikki

Serve the rice hot with the hot tikki, onion salad and raita of your choice. I had served it with cucumber raita:)
