Lemon Rice

One of the most easy to make and tasty variety of mixed rice is lemon rice. It’s a good lunch box option , very ideal dish to carry during travel or picnics too.
Also it’s my one my family’s most favourite dish 🙂



Cooked rice – 6 cups
Lemon – 2 medium sized
Salt to taste

For tempering

Oil – 4 tsps
Mustard – 1 tsp
Split urad dal ( ullundhu) – 1 tsp
Chana dal ( kadala Paruppu)- 1 tsp
Roasted peanuts – 2 tbsps
Green chillies – 2-3
Ginger – 1/2 inch piece
Curry leaves – few
Turmeric powder ( manja podi) – 1/2 tsp
Hing ( asafoetida/ perungayam)- 1/4th tsp


Wash and chop green chillies, ginger and curry leaves.

In a big bowl, add the cooked rice and salt to taste and mix well.

Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard. When it starts spluttering, add split urad dal, Chana dal, peanuts, chopped ginger, green chillies, curry leaves, hing and turmeric powder.
Sauté for few seconds and add the tempering to the rice.


Mix well and check the seasonings. Cut the lemon, squeeze and extract the juice. Add it to the rice and mix well again.

Serve the rice with avial/ raita / morekhuzhambu and papad 🙂
